The needs of consumers, the needs of farmers – an unstable equilibrium

Viviers de France is a fully-integrated ‘trout’ company that operates farms, processing and sales – fully adapted to ISO 14001 and the national French Quality Charter. Before the ‘Mad Cow’ crisis, aquaculture production had to be maximised and, above all, efficient. After the crisis, it has become essential that one knows not only how to produce but how to communicate what the sector does in order to be present in the marketplace. Fortunately, the product corresponds to the needs of the consumer and the farmers have consistently demonstrated their ability to develop and adapt to new standards.

However, farmers cannot or do not know how to approach certain issues, where help and assistance is required – particularly in the context of assuring sustainable aquaculture. The success of European aquaculture has to include the citizen-consumer’s acceptance of responsible and sustainable fish farming.

Arnault Chaperon is the Managing Director of 'Viviers de France' and a Board Member of the French Federation of Aquaculture
