Vertical transmission of diseases:Control methods and problems raised

Click to see presentationOne very important part of our job is checking the broodstock . At present, we do not have the tools to combat Vertical Transmissions of diseases, whereas we work hard to fight against Horizontal Transmissions, which are  easier to manage.

In this presentation, Guirec Dewavrin insists on the quarantine method as a basis of a better hygiene management.

He demonstrates the low reliability of the present tools and the dramatic consequences which can follow, especially if the company starts new species. The coelomic liquids can easily contaminate the healthy broodstock.

One proposition is to create a European quarantine and genetic selection center.

The eggs are vertical transmission vectors; do the disinfectants and protocols in use today guarantee a rearing protection ?Are the hormones in use free from  pathologies ?

With 24 years of practical experience, Guirec Dewavrin is one of the pioneers of sea bass and sea bream fish hatcheries in Europe.Guirec worked for 6 years in Ifremer Palavas, and he is well known for the hatcheries he created or managed such as the P2M Labrax of Monaco ( a Japanese bulk-cargo ship converted into a fish hatchery), Ferme Marine de Douhet ( Ile d’Oléron, France) and the S.P.F. hatchery Aquastream ( Brittany, France).Guirec is now a consultant and the manager of AQUABIOTOP. He promotes strict hygiene procedures in fish husbandry and the implantation of the “Total Quality Procedures”.
