Automation and mechanisation helping quality in marine hatcheries

(Click to see presentation) Click to see presentation

This presentation describes the evolution of production systems in marine fish hatcheries during the last few years.

The new knowledge, the evolution of the technologies, the development of the new products have brought  a significant increase in the quantity of fries produced every season.

Global market assessments for marine warm-water species produced in the Mediterranean area have demonstrated, in recent seasons, a rising interest in the quality of the product rather than the quantity.

Many big groups of fries producers have reduced the total production of juveniles to concentrate the investments in the control and optimisation of the systems and standardisation of the quality of the final product.

Other efforts have been aimed at optimising  production systems for new species, with a view to diversifying the offer for the market.

Many new interesting species are in “experimental” production in different parts of the Mediterranean area, and in the future they will play an important role in the final market

For all these reasons it has become clear to everybody that the key word for the near future will be QUALITY, helped by constant investments in automation and mechanisation in all sectors of hatchery operation.

Roberto Menegatti works as Quality Manager for Valle Ca’ Zuliani, a private Organisation that has two marine hatcheries and three on-growing units, that produce mainly sea bass and sea bream. Since 1998, after a degree in aquaculture and seaculture at the University of Bologna, he has been responsible for the hatchery’s quality management (selection programs, automation and mechanisation, data elaboration, customer satisfaction)
