New species are seeing by many as the panacea for solving the problems of the Bass and Bream sector. Not that easy. Anyhow, the speaker would have preferred to talk about new products; including new species, new presentations, different sizes and of course, new strains.
There is no doubt that new species have an important role to play in the development of fish farming, but the speaker has always made a cautious approach about them. On one hand, to develop profitably a new species takes years, lustrums we should say. On the other, many species that were believed at once as promising, end up being a fiasco; sometimes for technical reasons, some for economical failures, some because a real market analysis was not made before the efforts were put forward. So it is a very expensive exercise.
Some characteristics that a new species has to have –in order to have the best business probability of success- will be proposed and discussed.
