This presentation aims briefly to describe and analyse the current and future situation of seabream production and its markets in the EU. It is derived from a study made by GIRA for the European Commission under the PEPPA programme. However, opinions expressed here are those of the authors and not of the Commission.
The EU seabream market will continue to experience rapid growth (around 6% per annum). However, EU production will grow at only just over half that rate, thus implying even more reliance on third country imports. Production in Greece, with around 60% of EU production today, will grow even less rapidly, thus losing significant market share.
All of this means continuing price wars, un-transparent markets, and more power to the wholesalers. Introducing change (e.g. vegetable feed) or adding value in these circumstances will be increasingly difficult.
Measures must be taken to regulate the market if farmers are to benefit from the rise of modern multiple retailing while avoiding "commoditisation" of their product
Andrew Cookson is managing director of the food and drink consulting and market research arm of the GIRA group. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant and obtained an MBA before joining GIRA in 1989. He has headed a number of major projects in aquaculture, involving both consumer research and analyses of the supply chain.
GIRA has been active in consultancy and market research in the food chain since 1970. It is currently involved in the EU's 'PEPPA' project on fishmeal replacement.
