A major part of the stocking material for recreational fish ponds was produced in carp ponds, alongside carps, as can be seen in the information presented for Austria (figure 1). This kind of production is especially important for those fish farms whose main activity is the production of fish for stocking activities (figure 2). Since the fish species used for stocking are clearly more expensive than carp, the production of pike-perch, whitefish etc. has a high economic importance - even when produced in low amounts.

In addition to this consideration, large individual carps are also needed in large amounts as the main stocking material for artificial ponds/lakes (e.g. quarry ponds). A great amount of fish that are caught in lakes or larger rivers derives from the recreational use of these waters. Consequently, the production of stocking material for recreational ponds provides a remarkable market for fish farmers.
