Feeding fish has always been a traditional part of fish farming according to countries, fish species and farming conditions. Following the rapid growth of intensive aquaculture across the world and particularly in Europe, the aquafeed industry has developed active R&D programs on nutrition and technology, raw material sourcing and feeding management, thus fulfilling the nutritional requirements of numerous intensive farmed fish species. The achievement of these goasl has taken place during the last thirty years.
After a 'pioneer' period and major capital investments in new technologies to process and produce feeds that fulfil the farmers' needs, the aquafeed business is now becoming a major partner for sustainable aquaculture. The major objective of this growing and mature industry is to supply the fish farmers with safe products that cover all the needs of the species farmed . The principle challenges are to be ecologically friendly and economically efficient.
Aquafeeds represent the main farming input and cost to produce high quality fish for the satisfaction and the security of the consumer. In Europe. the aquafeed business strictly applies the EU regulations and often anticipates the future developments. This is a key success factor for the future, associated to modern farming methods, to satisfy the new requirements of the consumer in respect of fish quality, food security and welfare.
