The first culture trials in Ireland on rearing cod are currently being undertaken at the MRI Carna Laboratories. Installation of the marine finfish hatchery was completed in January 2003. Three separate batches of cod eggs were imported from Orkney and the Isle of Man between February and April 2004. Today’s presentation will describe the hatchery facilities recently completed at the laboratory and present progress to date on the larviculture trials.
Dr. Mark Harvey has studied and worked in the aquaculture sector for over 16 years. He completed a Diploma in Applied Aquatic Science at the RTC in Galway in 1990 and then transferred to the University of Aberdeen to undertake a B.Sc. in Marine Zoology. In 1995, he completed a Ph.D. entitled ‘A physiological and morphometric study of smoltification in sea trout and salmon in Ireland’ at University College Dublin. He worked as a fish health and production manager with Gaelic Seafoods (Ire.) Ltd. for five years. Between 2001 and 2003, he worked for Vet-Aqua International as a fish health and aquaculture consultant. Currently he is undertaking a senior post-doctoral fellowship entitled ‘Investigations into hatchery rearing of cod in Irish conditions’ based at the Martin Ryan Marine Science Institute (MRI) Carna Laboratories in Carna, Co. Galway.This Institute is the home of marine science research at the National University of Ireland Galway.
