The current portfolio of UK sponsored aquaculture R&D will be outlined. This presentation will briefly describe the way that aquaculture R&D is funded in the UK. A strategic picture of R&D priorities and the allocation of resources will be discussed, together with the mechanisms that are in place to co-ordinate these activities. The importance of collaborative R&D between the aquaculture industry and the research community will be explored.
The presentation will touch upon the relationship between the recently devolved Government bodies within the UK and the various fora that are evolving to support aquaculture R&D. The setting up of these bodies is seen as an important step in promoting and supporting regionally specific aquaculture research.
Dr Mark James is a Marine Biologist with a background in the reproductive ecology of bivalve invertebrates. After completing postdoctoral research fellowships with the Royal Society and the Leverhulme Trust, he was recruited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF – now Defra) as part of the Chief Scientists Group, with responsibility for the Aquaculture Commission. In 1996, he left the Civil Service to set up Fisheries Resource Management Limited (FRM) a consultancy business based in Scotland.
FRM provides consultancy, management and scientific co-ordination services to the aquaculture and fisheries sectors. In addition, FRM provides strategic policy options advice to a range of public and private bodies that have included Defra, the Scottish Executive and the Seafish Industry Authority. It also co-ordinates collaborative R&D programmes between industry and the research community together with associated technology transfer.
Dr James is currently managing two EU Transnational projects related to change management within the capture fishery, has recently contributed to R&D reviews conducted by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, and has organised two international workshops on Approaches to the Detection of Faecal Coliforms in Coastal Waters, and Koi Herpes Virus. He has also recently been appointed as Chairman of the Seafish Industry Authority’s Aquaculture R&D appraisal panel.
