2) NEW AQUATT PROJECT - Assessment of Women Achievers in Aquaculture
A three-day workshop “Assessment of Women Achievers in Aquaculture” will take place in late 2004 with the support of the DG Fisheries.
Recent studies and projects have begun to identify the needs, trends, constraints and limitations on women working in the aquaculture sector. However, the existence of obstacles has not deterred many women from making a successful career in the aquaculture industry.
The workshop will present success stories under the themes of “Women in Tourism Initiatives”, “Women in Education and Research” and “Women in Peripheral Areas/ Production,” compare and contrast recent studies and projects on gender issues in the sector, and identify good practice in terms of leadership, decision-making, negotiations, communication and work life/balance.
For further information please email aquatt@aquatt.ie
3) NEW AQUATT PROJECT - Getting their hands wet: Blue Planet Exhibition for Children
AquaTT is partnering up with organisations from Portugal and France in an effort to put marine science & environmental protection in the hands of the future, through development and implementation of a major children’s exhibition, Blue Planet.
AquaTT will coordinate the marine science content for the exhibition, and spearhead the planning and staging of the exhibition’s debut in Ireland, with Blue Planet, Cork 2005 and Blue Planet, Dublin 2006.
Interactive games, educational contests, and dynamic informational stands will provoke children’s curiosity and willingness to actively participate in saving the planet – both its lands and waters. Open to the public and free for children to attend, the exhibition will run over the course of a week with specific dates to be announced.
While a similar event has already been successful in Portugal, the Blue Planet project will bring the exhibition to an international theatre, and allow for the addition of new environmental subjects, including the marine science section.
Blue Planet will be partially funded by the Community Initiative Interreg III B – Atlantic Area, and AquaTT is currently seeking additional external sources of funding from the private and public sectors.
AquaTT, the European Network for Education and Training, supports the aquaculture industry through the provision of support services and through participation in and coordination of EU projects and programmes in the area of education, training and technology transfer. AquaTT is a non-profit making organisation and all money generated is used to directly support the industry. Please e-mail erin@aquatt.ie for more information on the Blue Planet project.
4) Scottish Modern Apprenticeship approved for Aquaculture
Press release from Lantra:
Scottish Modern Apprenticeship approved for Aquaculture
A new training programme, designed to give people a valuable insight into aquaculture and gain practical skills and experience, is now available in Scotland. The Scottish Modern Apprenticeship in Aquaculture was developed by Lantra following demand expressed by employers, and has now received approval from MAIG, the Modern Apprenticeship Implementation Group.
The Modern Apprenticeship provides a tailored solution to the aquaculture industry's need for employees who can combine technical knowledge with practical skills. Modern Apprenticeships are a route by which people can begin a career in aquaculture, learn practical skills and achieve nationally recognised qualifications. They are government backed training schemes aimed primarily at young people aged between 16-24, however in certain regions funding is available for older people.
Candidates enrolling on the Aquaculture Scottish Modern Apprenticeship will gain the nationally recognised Aquaculture Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ), in addition to the Core Skills of communication, working with others, problem solving, IT and numeracy. Apprentices also gain industry-specific certificates appropriate to their own circumstances and the business in which they work, such as Sea Survival, a Fish vaccination Course, or Emergency First Aid.
"We are delighted to have helped the industry to access this benchmark demanded by their Aquaculture Industry Action Plan", says Tricia Bloomfield, Lantra's Industry Partnership Manager for Aquaculture. "The take-up of the Aquaculture Modern Apprenticeship so far is very encouraging and initial feedback from the apprentices is very positive".
Taking the industry forward
As the Sector Skills Council for the Environmental and Land-based Sector, Lantra is committed to helping the industry address recruitment, training and business development needs. An Aquaculture Industry Group, made up of Aquaculture employers and representatives from across the UK, meets and communicates regularly to steer priorities and advise Lantra on skills issues. The group is chaired by Douglas McLeod, a figure well known in the industry, not least for his role as Chair of the Association of Shellfish Growers.
"It is the industry that shapes and influences Lantra's work. We recognise that employers are experts in their own field, who know, first hand, the requirements of the industry, so we are keen to listen", says Tricia Bloomfield.
Following wide consultation, a significant step forward has been the production, by the Aquaculture Industry Group, of an industry specific action plan, available on Lantra's website www.lantra.co.uk. This has provided a much-needed focus for the longer-term goal of addressing the recruitment, training and workforce development issues that face the industry.
If you would like to help shape the future of training and skills in the aquaculture industry, and get involved with Lantra's work for aquaculture, contact Tricia Bloomfield on 07867 908179, email tricia.bloomfield@lantra.co.uk or Billy Sweeney on 07867 908184, email billy.sweeney@lantra.co.uk.

6) MARIE CURIE HOST FELLOWSHIPS - Doctoral Students Involved in Seaweed Research
Does your doctoral research topic involve any aspect of seaweed biology? If so, apply to work with the largest group of marine algal specialists to be based in a single UK university, and spend 3-12 months at the Queen's University Marine Laboratory (QUML) at Portaferry in Northern Ireland. A Marie Curie Training Site on "Marine macroalgae: physiological and biochemical ecology, molecular phylogeny, and aquaculture" was approved for 4 years starting in 2002. Doctoral students from EU countries (other than the UK) can apply for fellowships for between 3 and 12 months, which cover travel to and from QUML, and subsistence of 1200 Euros per month for the duration of the visit.
We can offer you training in, and facilities for, up-to-date techniques to estimate rates of physiological or biochemical processes (some of which can be measured in situ) and levels of environmental parameters that might affect these processes in littoral or sublittoral habitats. We can also train you in molecular techniques for analysing DNA from seaweeds, and interpreting the results in terms of the evolution of the species, or its recent geographical migrations. If your interests lie in the ecological interactions, biodiversity or conservation of seaweeds, you can benefit from QUML's easy access to a wide range of coastal types, from fully exposed rocky shores to sheltered sand and mud beaches, many located in nature reserves, as well as our experience of biotope mapping and studying the dynamic relationships between seaweeds and their grazers, epiphytes and competitors. Aquaculture and the commercial applications of seaweeds also feature strongly in our research programme (QUML is home to QUB's Centre for Mariculture and Marine Resources), and extensive facilities are available for both rope and tank cultivation of economically valuable species, and for examining the ability of seaweed species to effect bioremediation of waste water from sewage or industrial plants.
The resources of QUML are backed up by the full laboratory facilities of the School of Biology & Biochemistry on the main QUB campus in Belfast, which is only 1 hour's drive from Portaferry. If you stay for 9-12 months, you may also register for the School's M.Res. course, and return home with a recognised QUB qualification.
We are now inviting applications from students who wish to start their Fellowship at QUB between 1 April and 30 September 2004. Up to 4 Fellowships will be available in this fifth round. Further information and application forms can be obtained from the addresses below. Completed applications should be returned to Professor Dring by 31 January 2004. The next deadline for applications will be 31 July 2004 for projects commencing between 1 October 2004 and 31 March 2005.

COLLABORATION
7) Don’t forget “Marie Curie” – A useful tool for researchers in aquaculture
Source: information sourced from Europa website.
The Marie Curie program could be a very useful tool for researchers in Europe who are not involved in large research project.
The Sixth Framework Programme's Human Resources and Mobility (HRM) activity has a budget of €1,580 million and is largely based on the financing of training and mobility activities for researchers. These activities, known as the Marie Curie Actions, are aimed at the development and transfer of research competencies, the consolidation and widening of researchers' career prospects, and the promotion of excellence in European research.
The actions are open to researchers in all fields of scientific and technological research from the EU Member States, from countries associated with FP6 and from third countries.
Eligibility for the various schemes is based on research experience and expertise, not age. All levels are covered from researchers at the start of their career to world-class researchers with well-established scientific expertise. The actions are also open to business, universities and institutions active in research.
The opportunities open to individual researchers depend on their level of research experience. There are two main categories of researchers eligible for funding:
· Early-stage researchers: This refers to researchers at the beginning of their research career with less than four years' active research experience (e.g. researchers undertaking a doctoral degree);
· Experienced researchers: This applies to researchers with more than four years of active research experience or those with a doctorate degree. For some actions, researchers with more than ten years of experience will not be eligible.
Individual researchers interesting in taking part in a Marie Curie Action have two options:
· To apply directly to an institution that has been selected by the Commission for a Host-Driven Action. This covers:
o Marie Curie Research Training Networks
o Marie Curie Host Fellowships for Early Stage Research Training
o Marie Curie Host Fellowships for the Transfer of Knowledge
o Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses
· To prepare a project together with a host institution of your choice and submit it to the Commission. This options applies to:
o The Marie Curie Individual Fellowships
o The Excellence Promotion and Recognition Actions and
o The Return and Reintegration Actions;
8) How can businesses, universities and research organisations benefit from Marie Curie
Research organisations can apply to the Commission for funding to provide the following types of training opportunities for researchers of any age or nationality:
· Initial Training: This is best suited to researchers at the beginning of their careers and is normally focused on structured training (e.g. via tutorials, courses and acquisition of complementary skills in addition to training-through-research). This includes:
o The Marie Curie Training Networks
o The Marie Curie Host Fellowships for Early-Stage Research Training and
o The Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses.
· Transfer of Knowledge: This is mainly aimed at institutions that want to develop their research capabilities via the hosting or secondment of researchers with more experience or specialised knowledge. In particular, multidisciplinarity and intersectorial exchange will be encouraged. Included in this category are:
o The Research Training Networks
o The Host Fellowships for the Transfer of Knowledge
o The Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses
o The Marie Curie Chairs
o The European Reintegration Grants and
o The International Reintegration Grants.
· Advanced Training: This type of training provides an environment where experienced researchers can receive advanced or specialised training. This includes:
o The Marie Curie Conferences and Training Courses
o The Marie Curie Individual Fellowships
o The Marie Curie Chairs
o The European Reintegration Grants and
o The International Reintegration Grants .
· Other Facilities: This includes funding for the organisation of conferences and training courses or for hosting world-class researchers either as Marie Curie Chair-holders or as team leaders in Marie Curie Excellence Grants.
Under these schemes, the host institutions will be selected by the Commission and will be given the freedom (within certain guidelines) to select the researchers who will benefit from the training, or who will participate in the transfer of knowledge.
AquaTT would be happy to advise on applying for Marie Curie calls. Please contact David Murphy, david@aquatt.ie or +353 1644 9008
ANNOUNCEMENTS
9) PROFET - Inland fisheries and fresh water aquaculture, Budapest, Hungary, 20-21st February 2004
The fourth Workshop of the PROFET initiative will be held in Budapest, 20-21 February 2004. This is being coordinated by the Hungarian Fish Farmers Association, the German Freshwater Fishfarmers Association and the FEAP.
The term ‘inland fisheries’ is used to cover an important inland food supply sector. While coastal areas of Europe have access to the sea, inland Europe has traditionally turned to lakes and rivers, in many cases using extensive aquaculture techniques, for their fresh fish supplies. Carps remain a prized product for many, reflecting a long history of the culture of these species, primarily common carp (Cyprinus carpio). This fish remains a festive dish, particularly for Christmas or Easter dinners.
Characterised by hot summers and cold winters, the salmonid freshwater species that are well known in other parts of Europe do not adapt so well to these conditions. The multiple purpose use of lakes, including water management and recreational activities, includes stocking with carps, pikes and other fish species that are a vital part of the extensive aquaculture systems.
The political changes that occurred in the 1990s in Central and Eastern Europe had a profound effect on the structure and organisation of aquaculture and inland fisheries in this region of the world, where the accession of countries having a long history of farming fish will undoubtedly raise questions as to how these important sectors can adapt to change, particularly within the context of a common market.
The PROFET workshop that will be held in Budapest has these questions to the fore, examining specifically the RTD needs of the sector for securing a sustainable future within the European fish farming sector.
The first session will provide a description of the PROFET initiative and set the background for the workshop, including a description of the role of freshwater aquaculture and fisheries within the European Commission’s strategy for the sustainable development of European aquaculture. An analysis of the facilities applicable for RTD projects in the 6th Framework Programme will also be given. The opportunities provided by specialised networks and organisations will finalise this session.
